Symptoms of Atrial Fibrillation

Not everyone experiences the same symptoms when suffering from Atrial Fibrillation. This may differ from individual to individual. Some patients suffer from AF for years without noticing it (silent AF).
Other people with AF feel their heart beating in a fast or irregular fashion. That may cause excitation and can be frightening. Under physical exertion one may feel tired or short of breath faster then normal. Dizziness or a light headed feeling may also be related symptoms.

Possible symptoms are:

• “Racing” of the heart (sudden rapid, irregular and chaotic heartbeats)
• Lack of energy
• Fatigue
• Dizziness
• Pain, pressure or just an uncomfortable feeling on the breast
• Shortness of breath
• Lethargy
• Loss of attention

The course of atrial fibrillation is often progressive. Initially there are relatively short episodes that spontaneously pass.
Over time, these episodes occur more often and stay longer.
At some point they stop only after the administration of drugs or an electric shock.
Still later, a situation may occur where even shocks are not effective anymore. Atrial Fibrillation has than become persistent.
Medication  that worked well initially, later on often loose their effect.
